“A recognition of South Africa’s strong commitment to cultural diplomacy”
The International Jazz Day is celebrated annually on 30th April across the globe to highlight the art form of jazz and its capacity to bring people together, and its power to promote respect for human rights and diversity. It was declared by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization in the year 2011. The idea of celebrating Jazz day was proposed by jazz pianist and UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador, Herbie Hancock. Every year, nearly 200 countries participate in this mega event. Apart from wonderful concerts and jam sessions, the International Jazz Day also includes workshops, conferences, and community outreach.
According to the recent announcement made by UNESCO’s Director-General, Audrey Azoulay, the International Jazz Day Global Host City for 2020 will be Cape Town, South Africa. The Director-General also mentioned that this decision is a recognition of South Africa’s strong commitment to cultural diplomacy. It would be the first time that the event is hosted by an African city. Being the 2020 Global Host City, Cape Town will showcase a unique history and heritage of Jazz.
As far as the 2019 International Jazz Day is concerned, it will be held in Australia. A series of jazz performances will take place in Adelaide, Mount Gambier, Sydney, Perth, and other Australian cities. In the week prior to International Jazz Day, the celebration will commence with a jazz education programme for student musicians in the native community of Yarrabah in Northern Australia. Similar programmes will be held in Sydney for students from New South Wales public schools. On 29th and 30th April, a wide range of jazz performances, education programmes, and community service initiatives will be presented in the University of Melbourne. The event will feature more than a dozen prominent jazz performers. The events on International Jazz Day on 30th April will culminate in an All-Star Global Concert at the Melbourne Arts Centre’s renowned Hamer Hall. It will be webcast via YouTube and Facebook to millions of viewers worldwide.
